Here are a selection of my notes from the talk by Paul Haye sat the Dublin Web summit. Full audio is available at:
Advice on advisory boards
- Add the people you need to an advisory board by giving them an experience / make them feel wanted. e.g. bring them somewhere vip / fancy/ nice bottle of wine, luxury experience that they will remember.
- Do not over use them, get some customers and key figures in the industry
- Do not pay your advisory board members.
What marketing matters??
- Ask yourself why is your market hot?, and then seed the market with thoughts and ideas
- Do not talk about yourself, and never talk about your technology.
- People do not remember you feature List
- Work on your tag line (and it should fit on a t-shirt)
- It is never to early to talk to customers….
- Adverts / viral tip: produce an advert that is banned in one country and promote is as so in another. country.
People remember how you make them feel, so focus on how they feel , not what you say.
- e.g. If you are running events during conferences E3 etc
- Host a small party (WHY? to create a buzz / a feeling that they will remember)
- invite everyone, if someone cannot get it you can always schedule lunch with them
- Find cool wanted things such as surf boards, brand then and give them out to the right people (heads of companies you want to work with etc)
- Consider not having a stand , instead go guerrilla style, hire a camper van / boat / party bus and get everyone onboard. Booze up, show them a good time and build contacts that way.
Only use a Press release when:
- you raised money
- landed a customer.
